September is Tourism Month
From September 1-30, the Department of Tourism of Puerto Vallarta, in conjunction with the private initiatives, will host a series of cultural, sporting, culinary and educational events all designed to celebrate and promote "September: The International Month of Tourism".
The idea of "Tourism Month" in September arises from the celebration of World Tourism Day instituted on September 27, 1980, by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) with the aim of promoting the importance of tourism on social, cultural, political and economic spheres among the international community.
Since the decree of World Tourism Day, the WTO has invited all organizations concerned to participate each year on September 27th, with special events designed to strengthen the celebration in every tourist destination in the world. This year Puerto Vallarta will formally join in this commemoration for the first time.
September is Patriotism Month - Sep 14-16
El Grito de Indpendencia is celebrated at midnight on September 15, the night that Father Hidalgo rang the bell in Dolores Hidalgo in 1810, raising the call to arms for Mexico's Independence from Spain. Every year on this night in cities all over Mexico, this event is reinacted in the town plaza by the mayor. The president will ring the bell from a balcony at the Presidential Palace for thousands of revelers in the Zocalo in Mexico City. The following day, 16 de Septiembre is a national holiday. There will be a parade through downtown Puerto Vallarta. It is traditional to dress in the colors of the Mexican flag; green, red and white. Children are dressed in costumes to resemble Morelos, another hero of the Mexican War for Independence.
September is Cuisine Month
To commemorate Tourism and Independence month, select restaurants will participate in the "Culinary Festivals" that take place throughout September: Kaiser Maximilian, The River Cafe and Outback Steakhouse are all offering special menus at reasonable prices; Each Tuesday, Spiaggia will offer a different chili specialty. Los Xitomates along with ten other restaurants have scheduled a "Festival of Vallartan Regional Cuisine" running from September 23 to 30h.
September is Culture Month - Sep 21 & 27
The University Centro Universidad de la Costa (CUC), will present the "Life of Frieda Kahlo" September 21 at the Los Arcos Ampitheater on the Malecon, and September 27 at the Juan Luis Cifuentes Auditorium, CUC. This is a multidisciplinary exhibit that covers the most important moments in the career of the renowned Mexican painter with the celebration of the centennial of her birth and the participation of local theatre groups and the University Center of Contemporary Dance. Admission is free for all audiences.
September is Sports Month - Tennis Open Sep 18-22
For tennis lovers, this celebration of tourism brings the First Annual Puerto Vallarta Tennis Open, a competition expected to attract the participation of 24 professional players endorsed by the Mexican Federation of Tennis and the Mexican Association of Professional Tennis. The matches will take place September 18 -22 at the Canto del Sol Hotel, which will also act as headquarters of the Pan American Children and Youth Badminton Championship, from September 11-16. The participation of 18 countries and more than 200 players that will face each other within the following age groups: SUB 11, 13, 15, 16 & 19. For both events, the cost of entry onto the grounds and the matches will be absolutely free.
September is Homage Month - Concert Sep 27
To wind up this action-packed month, on Sep 27 the city will grant a dual distinction to two personalities very dear to Vallartans. First, they will bestow an award of recognition to sculptor, Rafael Zamarripa, creator of the emblematic Sea Horse sculpture on the Malecon. Afterwards there will be a tribute to Jalisco singer, Marco Antonio Muniz, who will perform a free concert in the area in front of the Sea Horse sculpture.
